PICKWICK SALES CORP.
LONG ISLAND CITY 1, N.Y.
The first albums under the Design Label came out in 1957. Packaging was up to industry norms, decent vinyl, good jackets with full color covers, titles on the spine, and liner notes on the back. But, by 1959 the packageing had gone south, noisy vinyl with pits, bumps and bad sounds on the cuts. The jackets was made of two pieces of cardboard, held together by a very generic paper jacket back. The word 'budget' maybe a word used by the industry, but "cheap" is what is was.
Design, leaned heavily toward performances Pickwick owned, and songs in the public domain, and songs written by in-house staff. They had few artists who were not either studio musicians or groups, or artists seriously past their prime. Pickwick, who owned of most of Eli Oberstein's masters from labels like Royale, still had the very old masters by artists who had been popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They made use of these along with generic orchestral arrangements. They even found recordings of a currant hit makers of the time, that were made before the artist was a star or hit their stride or developed their own style.
