The 100 Voices of Christmas - Silent Night The 100 Voices of Christmas - Silent Night Back

One of the happiest times of the holiday season is the family gathering around the Christmas tree. The tree has meant many things to many people for centuries. The lights...the decorations...even the kind of tree we use are all parts of traditions that have come to us from many parts of the world.

Legend has it that in the eight century a missionary name St. Boniface found that non-religious people in Germany actually sacrificed humans during the yule season. He showed then the fir tree in a forest, telling them that it pointed to heaven and the Christ child. Boniface also told them that it was evergreen just as the principles of Christianity are eternal. He engcouraged bringing the tree into the home as if bring Christ into the home, and thereby eliminated the practice of human sacrifice.

It was Martin Luther who began the practice of lighting a tree. He used candles, hanging from branches, to represent the stars on Christmas Eve.

Each country has its own idea about decorations, everything from apples to birdcages! American customs have taken the tree outside the home too. The huge evergreen at Rockefellow Center has become a traditional sight for New York visitors and natives alike. An avenue of Christmas trees light up annual pageants in Altadena, California. Everywhere, the tree is looked upon as one of the merriest customs of the Christmas season.
