Legendary drummer Frank Capp was an active drummer in the late days of the big band era.
His first professional job was with the Stan Kenton Orchestra (1951) after he graduated from Boston University's
School of Music.
Two years later, he settled in Los Angeles; became a busy studio musician; and played as a member of the Warner Bros, contract orchestra for two years, then touring and playing with Andre Previn's Trio for eight (1957 - 1964), making over 20 albums with the master jazz pianist/conductor. He also made records with Benny Goodman (1958). He also performed live with George Shearing and the Dave Pell Octet.
He has played on thousands of recording sessions for all types of artists and kinds of music. Among his many studio appearances he recorded with Neal Hefti, Billy May, Stan Getz, Annie Ross, and Shorty Rogers. He has played drums for Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Harry James, Stan Getz, Benny Carter, Billy May, Charlie Barnet, and many, many others. He recorded often with Terry Gibbs, and Turk Murphy.
In 1960-61, he was featured on a dozen albums of "Stereo in Motion" and "Sounds You See and Hear" on the Kimberly label. These albums were overdubs of an earlier series by Dave Pell and Jerry Gray (with the exception of the Prado and Mancini albums), with Capp providing percussion effects over the top, to cash in on the rage for percussion records.
As a freelance studio musician, Capp performed on more than 200 motion picture soundtracks with many of Hollywood's most notable composers. He also worked on the Red Skelton Show for 10 yrs and The Steve Allen Show for 6 yrs. He has also served on the Board of Governors of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS).
He has continued to work in Hollywood and since the late 1970s, led a successful big band, the Capp-Pierce Juggernaut,
(later known simply as the Juggernaut)with pianist Nat Pierce, starting in 1975, (until the pianist's death in 1992)
with recordings on the Concord Jazz label.
The Capp-Pierce Juggernaut sometimes sounded identical to the '70s Count Basie Orchestra, and served as a perfect
format for the drummer's colorful playing. The orchestra is kept busy doing concerts, jazz festivals, parties, and
dances.
