Produced by Eli "Obie" Oberstein's Record Corporation of America from 1939 through 1957
Mr. Oberstein tendered his resignation on March 1, 1939 to the (Radio Corporation of America)
RCA Victor, where he worked. At the time, the trade publication Variety announced
that Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Larry Clinton, Sammy Kaye, Dick Todd and Buddy Clark expected
to join him. Mr. Oberstein along with his partners; Phillip Kastel, Lewis A. Jaffa are
forming a company, tentatively named 'Discs, Inc.' and will be releasings records by the
above name artists. Those first group of labels was Variety/Varsity/Elite. Well, we know
now that 'those' artists did not 'move' with Mr. Oberstein but their material did, since
'he' signed those folks to RCA Victor, but in doing so his contract also gave him 'rights'
to that material - so he just reissued the material under another musician's name who was
not as well known at the time of the first issues on the RCA Victor label. Now this is
a life time of what happens but in short - in 1945, "Obie" goes back to RCA Victor - as
Head of Artists and Repertoire, the section that 'finds' artists and who is going to be
promoted. (This is a guys who took from them in the first place and is now allowed to
see who they are going to make them money - fox in the hen house). By May 1948 he is again
out on his own and now has several labels that he is marketing under, using the new LP
format - doing nothing more than repressing the 78s in to 45 rpm, 33 1/3 in both 10" then
12" formats. By the 50s, Mr. Oberstein was reissuing material recorded for his labels on
new "junk" labels such as Royale, Allegro, Ultiphonic, Gramophone, and more.
The catalog consisted of re-releases of Allegro Records and tapes from German radio along with masters from the old 78 RPM Sonora, Majestic and Musicraft labels. The Tops label, including masters recorded by the old Black and White label was acquired around 1955 and jazz material was obtained from Savoy and the German Climax label. When The American Federation of Musicians refused to sign a contract with Oberstein, new releases used instrumental backups recorded in Europe to back American performers. The he way around it was have artist do their thing - then have the backups to their thing - then mix the two - and press the recording.
