Randolph C. ´Randy´ Wood, started Dot Records with Gene Nobles in Gallatin, Tennessee. In 1946, Wood had started an electrical appliance store called Randy´s, after serving in the Army in WW II. In 1947 he was selling records out of his store and as a mail-order business in 1948. By 1950, the mail order business had more sales than his electrical appliance sales. So he stopped selling appliances and renamed the store "Randy´s Record Shop."
Wood also became part owner of a local daylight radio station, when he and Nobles decided to form a label with a much wider distribution, and record local artists in the radio station after hours.
Dot first label was on a 10 inch platter. Maroon with silver printing. "Dot" in silver script above the center hole, "LONG 33 1/3 PLAY" and "DOT RECORDS, INC. * GALLATIN, TENNESSEE" at the bottom of the label. Initially, the series refered to as ´Dot 100´ were issued, although the Eddie Peabody (DLP-110), was issued as a 12 inch record with two other songs added, but keeping the same catalog number. The 10" LPs were used until 1955, when they were dropped, since the 12 LPs was becoming the norm. Dot´s 7" extended play [EP] 45 rpm record were also popular, but by 1961 it too was discontinued.
Their single 45 stereo record also stopped a short time later. It began in early 1959, with stereo coming in 1957, and was gone by mid-1962 or 63. Mostly used in stereo juke boxes, if you find a promo single, you may find one side in mono, the other in stereo.
In 1956, Wood moved from Gallatin to Hollywood. Then in 1957, Wood sold Dot Records to Paramount Pictures for three million dollars, no small sum in those days - well, almost any day, staying on as the President of the label for another ten years.
The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) wanted a major label for their record division (CBS had Columbia and NBC had RCA), and approached Wood to buy Dot. Paramount Pictures offered more, and won. ABC had to make due with their ABC-Paramount label, which they had started in 1955. Even though both companies used the name "Paramount," Paramount Pictures was not related to ABC/Paramount. This same names was due to a 1950 antitrust action that forced Paramount Pictures to divest themselves of their chain of theaters, Paramount Theaters. The latter became United Paramount Theaters, and in 1954 merged with the American Broadcasting Company to form ABC-Paramount in 1955. The Paramount name would occasionally show up in the Dot logo, but for some unknown reason, not all albums had the Dot-Paramount logo. After Gulf-Western bought Paramount in 1968, the Paramount name was more visible, and Dot was dropped.
