Blue Thumb Records was an American record label founded in 1968 by Bob Krasnow. Mr. Krasnow had been in the record business for a number of years, working as a promotion man for King Records branch office in San Francisco from 1958 to 1964 before founding Loma Records, (Loma Records was a Warner Brothers subsidiary run by Bob Krasnow from 1964 to 1966. The office overlooked Loma Avenue, hence the label name. It was started as an entry into the R & B (Rymthm and Blues) market, lasting until 1968.
He became vice president of
Kama Sutra Records in Los Angeles in 1966, where he cofounded, with
Art Kass, the
Buddah (Buddha) Record subsidiary label.
Some of the acts that recorded for the label include The Crusaders, Hugh Masakela,
Captain Beefhart, Aynsley Dunbar, Dave Mason, The Pointer Sisters, and T-Rex, and the
Mark-Almond band.
Blue Thumb started out distributing themselves, but went to Capitol/EMI for distribution
during late 1970 and early 1971. Gulf and Western's Famous Music Group took over
distribution from mid 1971 til 1974, when Famous Music was sold to ABC Records later in
the year. ABC kept the Blue Thumb imprint going (primarily for reissues, Pointer Sisters,
and Crusaders albums), right up until ABC was bought out by MCA Records during the first
part of 1979.
The label was revived in 1995 for non-jazz (usually blues & adult contemporary) releases.
This remain so even after the 1998 mega merger with parent Universal Music Group &
Polygram & being put under the fold of the Verve Music Group. But in early 2005, the Blue
Thump imprint was deactived & was replaced with Verve Forecast to handle such releases.
