This record is perhaps the finest example of Greek folk music available in the United States today. Through centuries of foreign oppression, folk music was not only a means of recreation and pleasure but also eaabled the Greeks to maintain their language and culture. The songs themselves show influences of various cultures while still remaining Greek in essence. With the advent of electricity into the rural areas, much of this music is being replaced by more modern and popular forms. Fortunately, certain organizations such as the National Folklore Archives, the Women´s Lycemn, and Dora Stratou´s Greek Festival Company had foreseen this and made an early effort to record, preserve and perform these songs and dances. The great variety of instruments, rhythms, and melodies in Greek folk music is phenomenal compared to the size of the country, approximately the size of New York State. There is the 7/8 rhythm of the Kalamatianos, the national dance of Greece; the lively 2/4 rhythm of the island dances, the more exotic sounds from Asia Minor. Songs from Epirus are performed with great skill by Tassos Chalkias, the head of a famous family of clarinetists and folk musicians; island songs are simply and typically sung by Irene Konitopoulos accompanied by violin and santouri, a zither-like instrument which is hammered with great speed. We feel fortunate that Lyra Records has captured on this recording the excitement and authenticity of Greek folk music.
