ON THE BACK OF THE JACKET
Rendezvous in Paris
Many of their songs capture the flavor of the more colorful sections of the city. Most of them deal with love — love that fills one with boundless contentment, love that dulls the sense of human loneliness, love that is elusive or untrue, or just a memory, or love that cruel and tormenting, either because it shackles the lover to his beloved or because it wanders off, indifferent to the longing it has roused. For these varieties of moods, the artful orchestral arrangements of Fontanna will prove pleasing, diverting and atmospherically convincing, for no one is more capable of translating Paris to music than he, a native Parisian.
His imaginative use of the accordion weaving through the ballads helps to strengthen the illusion that the listener is in the midst of a Parisian setting'. It is only proper, however, when one presents a musical characterization of Paris to give not only the sophisticated facade, not only the urban cliches, but to proble deeper to the folktunes which every French adult cherishes as part of his lost youth and innocence. So, on both sides of this record, sandwiched between the more modern selections, are potpourris of the old melodies which are as fresh and spontaneous today as when they were first written.
