Hawaii Calls
Favorite Instrumentals of The Islands
These beloved Hawaiian melodies are almost always sung.
But now they are heard as never before—in lovely
instrumental settings, recorded with superlative fidelity.
Bewitching Hawaiian strings, highlighted by delicate
celeste and exotic Hawaiian flute, capture all the color
of the islands'varied and seductive moods.
In weekly "Hawaii Calls" broadcasts from the Moana Hotel on Waikiki Beach, producer Webley Edwards has dramatized the enduring charm of the haunting, deeply romantic island music which is known throughout the world today for much the same appeal it had in the time of King Kamehameha, when Hawaii was discovered.
Listening to authentic Hawaiian music makes it easy to imagine how the hardbitten seadogs of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries must have felt when they first beached on the enchanted shores of what were then called the Sandwich Islands. Fresh from their wretched shipboard existence, the sailors were bewitched by the life of ease and plenty, the liquid-eyed women and the night air perfumed with tuberoses and vibrant with music.
And today the islands retain this exotic charm; the kiss of the tradewinds, exciting sword dances, the crash of waves on the coral shore, moonlight on Mauna Loa, and the wonderful joy of simply being alive in Hawaii. If an antidote could be prescribed for the fretful tensions of modern living, this might well be it!
